Born in 1963 Lebanon, Paris-based artist Mireille Kassar developed a rich and varied body of work that includes paintings, drawings, sound, films, writings and installations.
Kassar has exhibited internationally since 1996. Her works have been presented in Barcelona at the Miro Foundation, in Copenhagen at Turbine Hall, in Toronto at the YYZ Gallery, and recently at the Micheal klein gallery, in Glasgow at the Man Museum, in Paris at the Espace Réverdy (University of Paris XIII), in Bologna at the Palazzo Montanari and at the Biennal of Cuba. She is currently featured in the project « Mantek ul Tayr » - the First part will be presented at the Gallery Agial in Beirut Lebanon-may 2013- Her works are held in various private collections around the world.
Her recent paintings belong to her "Landscapes" series, a group of work on paper exploring the notion of landscape as a dimension, rather than a pictorial subject. Here, the landscape is treated as an expanded state of consciousness, often beyond or beneath language. It can be perceived as a readjustment of the sensorial experience, shifted from any discursive thought, hence "recognized" as an archetype of sorts, a primal recognition sensation.
It is from the search of a "state of being", ahead of all things known that her artistic approach develops, where painting, the central axis, the cornerstone foundation and regeneration of her practice, orients, organizes, and convokes other forms of art, all in dedication to this search.
Her artistic and spiritual pursuit leads her to close encounters with individuals, beings and lands, whose very geographical or cultural remoteness, are the pledge of a singular proximity. Distance, proximity, dispersion, time unfolding, cyclical, linear or otherwise, are often the parameters, and the constants that animate the heart of her life's work.
